A full phone is an unpleasant problem because the obvious fix is irreversible. Delete the wrong batch of photos and no amount of care afterwards brings them back. So people put it off, run at ninety-nine percent for months, and lose the camera at exactly the moment they want it.
The way out is not to delete more bravely. It is to reach a position where deleting is boring, because you have already confirmed the photos exist somewhere else.
The trap in "free up space"
Google Photos and several manufacturer tools offer a button that removes photos from the device once they are backed up. It works, and it is genuinely useful. It also quietly changes what your phone is.
After you press it, your photos live in one place: that company's cloud, tied to that account. If the account is locked, if the subscription lapses, or if you are somewhere without a connection, you cannot see your own pictures. The photos were not deleted, but your independent copy was, and those are not the same thing.
Find out what is actually using the space
Before deleting anything, look at where the space went. On most Android phones this is under Settings, then Device care or Battery and device care, then Storage.
Two categories are worth checking before you touch a single photo:
- Video. A handful of 4K clips routinely outweigh several thousand photos. If you are short by 20 GB, a dozen videos may cover it entirely.
- App caches. Streaming and social apps commonly hold 5 to 15 GB of regenerable cache. Clearing an app's cache is safe and costs you nothing but a slower next load.
Also look for duplicates and screenshots. Screenshots in particular accumulate invisibly and are almost never wanted a month later.
Sort your library into three groups
Almost every photo library divides into three, and the split is uneven in a helpful way:

The third group alone often solves the problem, and it carries no risk. Start there. It is remarkably common to recover 20 GB without going near a photo anyone cares about.
Verify before deleting, not after
This is the step that separates a safe cleanup from a bad afternoon. Confirming that a backup exists is not the same as confirming it is complete, and the difference only ever surfaces when it is too late to matter.
- Open the backup destination on a different device. A backup that has only ever been seen from the phone that made it is unverified.
- Compare counts. If the phone says 4,211 photos and the destination holds 3,780, do not delete anything until you know where the other 431 went.
- Open several of the largest files. Interrupted uploads frequently leave files that exist but are truncated, and a file listing cannot tell you that.
- Only then delete, and delete in batches rather than all at once.
Step two catches the majority of real problems. Upload failures are usually partial rather than total, so the destination looks populated and healthy while quietly being short.
How Favorites Gallery approaches it
Favorites Gallery treats freeing space as something that has to be earned rather than assumed. It backs up the photos you starred, then reports what it actually confirmed on the far side, folder by folder, with counts. Space is only offered for release against photos it has verified are present in the destination.
Your originals are never deleted without you saying so, and the app only ever removes its own copies. The distinction the interface keeps making is between what it uploaded and what it verified, because the gap between those two numbers is exactly where people lose photos.
The starred photos also carry an embedded XMP rating in each JPEG copy, so the curated set stays identifiable regardless of which device or app opens it later. That matters more than it sounds once the local copies are gone.
